Frequently Asked Questions

Fees, Medicare and Private Health
As the practitioners at My Space Psychology operate independently, they have the flexibility to establish their own fees for appointments. Consequently, the fees can vary depending on the practitioner. Below, we provide a guide to give you an idea of the fee range. When you contact our Reception Team to schedule your initial appointment, they can offer detailed information regarding the out of pocket costs.
* Medicare rebates apply when you are referred under a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
Funding options for psychological care
1) Medicare rebates
Eligibility:
You may qualify for Medicare rebates if you have a Mental Health Treatment/Care Plan (MHTP/MHCP) with a valid referral from a GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician (up to 10 sessions per calendar year).
If you have a chronic condition and a GP Management Plan (GPMP) plus a GP referral, you may be eligible for up to 5 sessions per year.
With an Eating Disorder Plan (EDP) from a GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician, up to 20 sessions per year may be claimed.
Booking and claiming:
Your GP must hold a longer consultation to prepare the relevant plan (MHTP, GPMP or EDP) and supply the referral letter.
Rebates are processed after each appointment and typically appear within 24 hours.
Other notes:
It’s possible to hold both an MHTP and a GPMP in the same year in some situations.
Once you exceed the Medicare Safety Net threshold, your rebate amounts increase. Check your Safety Net balance via the Medicare app or Services Australia. For registration or further details, see Services Australia.
Private health insurance rebates
You might be eligible to claim through private health cover if:
Your policy includes psychological services, and
You do not also claim a Medicare rebate for the same session.
Important:
Confirm coverage directly with your insurer. They may request the practitioner’s provider number or specific billing codes—our admin team can provide these on request.
Workers’ compensation (Workcover)
You may access Workcover funding if:
You have lodged a workers’ compensation claim, and
Your claim authorises access to psychological treatment.
Note: Only one clinician at My Space Psychology accepts Workcover. Fees and arrangements can differ—please confirm details with reception when booking.
2) Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Some employers fund short-term counselling via an EAP. Employers may nominate a provider or allow you to choose. EAPs commonly cover up to four sessions per year—check your employer’s policy for specifics.
3_ Private-paying clients
If you are paying privately, no referral is necessary.
A Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) is a plan for people with a mental health condition. If you have mental health issues, your doctor can write a plan for you.
We recommend that when you contact your GP, you request a longer than normal consultation to allow adequate time for an assessment and to complete the necessary paperwork. A referral can also be obtained from a Psychiatrist and Paediatrician.
You don't need a referral to book an appointment — feel free to contact us anytime. Note: Medicare rebates require a referral from a GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician; without one, you will be responsible for the full session fee.
Unfortunately, you are unable to use Medicare rebate and private health fund rebates at the same time. Only one method of rebate can be used for each session.
