Frequently Asked Questions

Fees, Medicare and Private Health
As the practitioners at My Space Psychology operate independently, they have the flexibility to establish their own fees for appointments. Consequently, the fees can vary depending on the practitioner. Below, we provide a guide to give you an idea of the fee range. When you contact our Reception Team to schedule your initial appointment, they can offer detailed information regarding the out of pocket costs.
Practitioner Category | Session Fee (50 Min) | Medicare Rebate (MHTP) * | Out of Pocket (after Medicare Rebate*) |
Senior Clinical Psychologist / Director | From $300 | $141.85 | From $158.15 |
Clinical Psychologist | From $270 | $141.85 | From $128.15 |
Senior General Psychologist | From $275 | $96.65 | From $178.35 |
Psychologist | From $210 | $96.65 | From $113.35 |
* Medicare Rebates (MHTP) are the rebates available if you are referred under a Mental Health Treatment Plan. For more information about Medicare rebates, see FAQ on Medicare Rebates.
Funding options for psychological services include: 1) Medicare Rebates
Accessing Medicare Rebates for Psychology Appointments
You may be eligible for Medicare rebates if:
You have a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) or Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP), with a valid referral from a GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician (up to 10 sessions per calendar year).
You have a chronic medical condition, with a GP Management Plan (GPMP) and valid referral from a GP (up to 5 sessions per calendar year).
You have an Eating Disorder Plan (EDP) from a GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician (up to 20 sessions per calendar year).
Booking and Rebate Process:
Your GP needs to schedule a “long consultation” to prepare your MHTP, EDP, or GPMP, and to provide an accompanying referral letter.
Medicare rebates are processed overnight after your session, and you should receive your rebate within 24 hours.
Additional Notes:
You may be able to have both a MHTP and a GPMP in the same calendar year, depending on your circumstances.
Medicare Safety Net:
After exceeding your Safety Net threshold for the year, your rebate will increase.
You can check your Safety Net status via the Medicare app or by visiting Services Australia.
For more details or to register as a family or couple, visit Services Australia.

2) Private Health Rebates
You may be able to claim private health rebates for your psychology sessions if all of the following conditions are met:
Your private health insurance policy covers psychological services.
You do not plan to claim a Medicare rebate for these appointments.
Important Considerations:
You are responsible for confirming whether your private health insurer covers the services you intend to claim. You can do this by contacting your insurer directly.
Your insurer may require your practitioner’s provider number to determine coverage. You can request this information from our friendly admin team.
Some private health insurers may require your practitioner to use specific billing codes for reimbursement. Please check with your insurer and provide this information to our admin team if needed.
3) Workcover You may be able to use worker’s compensation funding to pay for your appointments if all of the following circumstances apply:
You have made a workers’ compensation claim.
You are eligible to access therapy services under your workers’ compensation claim.
Please note that there is only one practitioner at My Space Psychology who provides Workcover psychological services. Fees for Workcover services may vary; please check with the administration team when booking your first appointment for more information.
4) Employee Assistance Program
Your employer may offer to cover the cost of psychology sessions through an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Some employers have partnerships with specific psychology practices, while others allow you to choose any psychologist you prefer. Typically, EAPs provide up to four sessions per calendar year.
5) Private Clients
Fees for private clients are outlined under the section 'Fees, Medicare and Private Health'. If you are a private-paying client, there is no referral required to see a psychologist.
A Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) is a plan for people with a mental health condition. If you have mental health issues, your doctor can write a plan for you.
We recommend that when you contact your GP, you request a longer than normal consultation to allow adequate time for an assessment and to complete the necessary paperwork. A referral can also be obtained from a Psychiatrist and Paediatrician.
You do not need a referral to make an appointment with us. If you wish to make an appointment you can contact us at any time. However, to access Medicare rebates, a referral from a GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician is required, otherwise you will be required to pay the full session fee out of your own pocket.
Unfortunately, you are unable to use Medicare rebate and private health fund rebates at the same time. Only one method of rebate can be used for each session.
As your appointment time is specifically held for you, we ask you to provide at least 48 hours’ notice if you would like to change your scheduled appointment time. The cancellation fee is 50% of the full session fee for 24-48 hours’ notice, and 100% of the full fee for less than 24 hours’ notice.
If you do need to cancel at late notice, our support team will work hard to rebook your cancelled appointment time. A cancellation fee will not be charged if we do manage to rebook your cancelled time and you will be notified as part of the process.
Medicare and Private Health Funds do not cover cancellation fees.
